Making the most of free entry at @ripley_castle_es

Making the most of free entry at @ripley_castle_estate up until the end of February.

Me and this North Yorkshire castle have history. I only wish I had the millions to snap it up off the market.

But, while the hunt for more serious buyers continues, I like to squeeze in a visit. Just in case, you know, the new owners decide they’re not so keen on middle aged women and rascally kids tramping through their parklands and gardens 🤷🏻‍♀️.

If there is another sunny day between now and the end of February, it is well worth taking the chance to roam the grounds, cracking the trails of cryptic clues, all for free. Just wear your boots 🥾.

🚗 the car park in the village is £2 for 3 hours
🚌 the 36 from Leeds, Harrogate and Ripon
🛝 there is a small playground at the north end of the village
☕️ 🍺 both the tearoom and The Boar’s Head are handy for refreshments
🍦soft serve fans fear not, Ripley Ice Cream has moved to a bigger place with inside seating (rather than closed as we feared)
🤓 like stories of fierce women? I’ll pop a link in my Stories to the article I wrote a few years back about the rather excellent Trooper Jane and how, rumour has it, she took a rather famous prisoner here one night…

Anyway, shout if you want to club together to buy it. I’m happy to stump up whatever cash I can find in my children’s money boxes.

Beyond the Visual is such an interesting and beautiful exhibition - curated and partially created by blind and partially sighted artists - and ideal for families.

Plus it’s free to enter and a lovely compact size (so much easier with younger ones as very little moaning about tired legs).

Definitely one for your back pocket this February half term.

You can also book their free workshops on Thursday 19 Feb to learn the process of making plaster casts with blind artist David Johnson and his assistant Emma Dickson.

Exhibition runs until 19 April 2026

In Norway, legend has it that today is the day witches arrive in a bid to ruin the festivities. To protect yourself, you must hide all mops and brooms. 🧹 Just worth noting in case you thought it important to do some last minute cleaning - save yourself and go and put your feet up instead.

One of our favourite Yorkshire days out just got a festive update 🎄❤️

If you are looking to inject a bit of magic into the holidays the @mediamuseum in Bradford is perfect for older kids and teens (although of course a blast for little kids too). Especially should you get a rainy or cold day.

The new permanent galleries and perennial favourite Wonderlab are free to enter (donations welcome). And now there’s stop motion workshops and a Christmas trail.

There’s a cafe and picnic area on site.

Plus, @picturevillecinema has a host of great Christmas films, including Elf, The Muppets Christmas Carol (light the lamp not the rat) and Tokyo Godfathers.

I mean, you definitely should.

I’ve loved @bradford_2025 (can’t believe it is almost over 😭)- and getting to see this year’s Turner Prize in one of our favourite galleries was the cherry on top.

It’s a great show for kids too - not too big, super beautiful and a brilliant playground and cafe close at hand.

Both my kids vote for @zadiexa for the win. I was a big fan of @nnena_kalu . My husband couldn’t decide between Rene Matić and Mohammed Sami. So we’re a family divided.

Oh and as a bonus, tickets are free (just book ahead).

This is a snippet of @lizweststudio Our Spectral Vision, a fun and colourful take on Isaac Newton’s experiments with light refraction through prisms.
